Scope
The central focus of the Film and Video Distribution Database (FVDD) is the distribution and promotion of artists' film and video in the UK. However, a number of organisations involved in this field have operated a policy of integrated practice and functioned as co-operatives or collectives. Similarly funders have been concerned with supporting production and exhibition alongside distribution. Furthermore, during the 1980s in particular artists' film and video formed part of a wider so-called 'independent film and video sector' in the UK, forming alliances with those involved in politically oriented moving image practice. And in 1982 the new Fourth Channel entered the arena offering new opportunities for commissioning and broadcast sales. In order to properly contextualise the distribution and promotion of artists' film and video, and facilitate a fuller understanding of the factors that impacted upon it, the FVDD incorporates material from a wide range of sources, which include the following:
  • Albany Video Distribution
  • Arts Council of Great Britain/Arts Council England and some of its regional offices
  • British Film Institute
  • Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation
  • Channel 4
  • Circles
  • Cinema of Women
  • Cinenova
  • Drury Lane Arts Lab
  • Fantasy Factory
  • Film and Video Umbrella
  • FACT
  • Friends of the Arts Council – Operative
  • Greater London Arts
  • Greater London Council
  • Independent Film, Video and Photography Association
  • IRAT
  • London Borough Grants Scheme
  • London Film and Video Development Agency
  • London Filmmakers' Co-op
  • London Video Access/London Electronic Arts
  • Lux (at Hoxton Square and Shacklewell Lane)
  • The Other Cinema
Coverage for these organisations varies, however, and has depended on (1) the extent of their engagement with distribution and promotion specifically, (2) the availability and accessibility of documentation, and (3) the limited nature of our project funding. The FVDD has been conceived as an ongoing project which will be added to as documentation and funding becomes available. We would welcome PhD research which uses the online material and/or is interested in making further selections from our offline archive for inclusion on the database. We would also welcome donations of further documentation which can help expand FVDD's coverage. If you are interested in contributing to the FVDD or helping develop it, please contact us.
